Beginning Course for Business

If you’re a large company you may have the budget to engage a nationally recognized, high-powered consultant. Or, you may have an internal communications department with resources to build your own social media marketing team. But typically, if you are a small to medium-sized business, you don’t need a social media consultant to tell you what you should be doing.

HOWEVER, you DO need at least these three things:

1) You need a thorough understanding of…

You need a thorough understanding of the mind set, the protocol, and the subtleties behind social media marketing—we mean really understand it, and embrace it! Don’t make the big mistake of underestimating the value of this component. If you do, you’ll wish you hadn’t.

2) You need to know how to…

You need to know how to use and integrate the tools (and yes, some of the time you can learn this on your own… However, there are some things you can learn quickly and much better from people with experience—helping you be FAR more effective). Also, social media tools and strategies change all the time. There’s no “silver bullet” and no single-source authority. It helps to have trusted resources to help you distill the tsunami of applications and strategies that constantly become available.

3) You need creative ideas for…

You need creative ideas for social media marketing to really work. It’s one thing to be proficient with tools and strategies. But even with everything “in place”… the strategy, tools, content, connections, applications… there’s still something missing. Seth Godin calls it Purple Cow thinking.

Social media marketing magic happens when the right strategy and tools are combined with great ideas—and you can learn how to become more creative. Everyone is creative. But sometimes business owners need methods for extracting their ideas and for making them happen. Sometimes you need to see examples of others’ successes that may have application in your business. Sometimes you just need a little time with experienced creative professionals (and/or classmates) to bounce ideas around. Without this component, an indispensable piece of your social media marketing puzzle may be missing.
